New RST 14.0.0.1143 doesn't allow HDDs to spin down (bug?)

I installed the new RST 14.0.0.1143 on my Z87 Mainboard with Windows 8.1 yesterday. Since there are no F6 drivers yet, i started the setup and then looked in %temp%, and there were the familiar x86 and x64 folders, just like in the F6 drivers. So i updated the driver from there via the device manager.

Something i soon noticed was wrong: The HDDs didn't spin down anymore after the 30 minutes i defined in the power savings plan.

At first i thought there could be something wrong with the extracted F6 driver files, but the folder content matched with the previous F6 drivers, and there was nothing unusual in the INF files either, which i compared. Just some new strings for newer chipsets.

I then made a roll-back to the old 13.6.0.1002 driver via device manager. The HDDs spun down after 30 minutes, everything normal.

To rule out that the 14.0.0.1143 drivers actually require the RST software to function properly, i installed the whole RST 14.0.0.1143. But with that, there is another problem, so i couldn't analyze the original problem further. The RST software keeps polling the SMART data from the HDDs and thus prevents them from spinning down anyway.

In Process Monitor, it looks like so:

  1. 23:21:55,2169899IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CreateFile \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 SUCCESS DesiredAccess:GenericRead/Write,Disposition:Open,Options:Synchronous IO Non-Alert,Non-DirectoryFile,Attributes: n/a,ShareMode:Read,Write,AllocationSize: n/a,OpenResult:Opened
  2. 23:21:55,2170929IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880DeviceIoControl \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 SUCCESS Control: SMART_RCV_DRIVE_DATA
  3. 23:21:55,2172062IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880DeviceIoControl \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 SUCCESS Control: IOCTL_SCSI_PASS_THROUGH_DIRECT
  4. 23:21:55,2175240IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CloseFile \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 SUCCESS
  5. 23:21:55,2196952IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CreateFile \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 SUCCESS DesiredAccess:GenericRead/Write,Disposition:Open,Options:Synchronous IO Non-Alert,Non-DirectoryFile,Attributes: n/a,ShareMode:Read,Write,AllocationSize: n/a,OpenResult:Opened
  6. 23:21:55,2197896IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880DeviceIoControl \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 SUCCESS Control: SMART_RCV_DRIVE_DATA
  7. 23:21:55,2198977IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CloseFile \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 SUCCESS
  8. 23:21:55,2220264IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CreateFile \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 SUCCESS DesiredAccess:GenericRead/Write,Disposition:Open,Options:Synchronous IO Non-Alert,Non-DirectoryFile,Attributes: n/a,ShareMode:Read,Write,AllocationSize: n/a,OpenResult:Opened
  9. 23:21:55,2221176IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880DeviceIoControl \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 SUCCESS Control: SMART_RCV_DRIVE_DATA
  10. 23:21:55,2222212IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CloseFile \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 SUCCESS
  11. 23:21:55,2244052IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CreateFile \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 SUCCESS DesiredAccess:GenericRead/Write,Disposition:Open,Options:Synchronous IO Non-Alert,Non-DirectoryFile,Attributes: n/a,ShareMode:Read,Write,AllocationSize: n/a,OpenResult:Opened
  12. 23:21:55,2244945IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880DeviceIoControl \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 SUCCESS Control: SMART_RCV_DRIVE_DATA
  13. 23:21:55,2245982IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe 4880CloseFile \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 SUCCESS

So i uninstalled RST and went back to the 14.0 F6 drivers only for analyzing. But no matter what i tried, even setting the spin-down to 1 minute in the power management, the HDDs won't spin down with the new driver.

I read a bit more about the mechanism here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/c/5/9c5b2167-8017-4bae-9fde-d599bac8184a/Disk_Idle_Detection.doc

Apparently the power manager, after the defined time, sends a request packet to the disk driver, asking for the HDD to go from D0 state (fully on) to D3 state (standby, stop spinning). Then the disk driver should convert this packet into an ATA command, telling the drive to enter standby. But from what i see, the drive never receives this command with the RST 14.0. When i roll back to 13.6.0.1002, it works fine again. With the 14.0, no go, i tried everything. And contrary to when you install the full RST software, with just the F6 driver there is also no SMART data polling that could interrupt things.

I'm at a loss here. Sadly i don't have the "PwrTest" tool from the Windows Driver Kit to test the mechanisms any further. But i'm hoping for someone else to know what's going on, or at least reproduce this possible bug.

i have been struggling with updating my drivers for my Intel(R) G41 Express Chip set. i have downloaded the newest driver for OS: Windows 7 as a zip file onto my computer.

When i click set-up i get an error prompt saying this computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Could it be because my OS is Windows 10?

The current drivers that are installed for Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset are for windows XP. Any advice ?

Unsure on what's the latest version of Intel Management Engine for a Z77 motherboard

Hello, I've got an ASUS P8Z77-V LX motherboard with an Intel core i7-3770K CPU. I installed Windows 10 Pro x64 and was wondering what's the latest version of the Intel Management Engine driver...

Searching for Z77 this version comes up: MEI_allOS_1.5M_8.1.40.1416;

Searching for management, that's the latest version: ME_Win10_1.5M_11.0.0.1158;

On the ASUS website, that's the latest version available for the latest Windows: MEI_Win8-1_VER95101658_1-5M.

As you can see these are all different so I was wondering what's the latest compatible version for: Windows 10 x64 and a Z77 chipset together.

P.S. Other than the Intel Management Engine, what other things should I install after a fresh install of Windows? (for example, the iGPU, etc...)

Thanks and have a nice day

How Do I expand a RAID10 array

I have a server with (4) 150G HDD's in a RAID10 configuration.  I need to increase the capacity of the drive.  I have installed 4 new 1TB HDD's.  I rebuilt each new HDD as I added it.  At this time, the RAID is  normal (not degraded) but the  total array size is still 300G.  There are 2 partitions C: and D:   How do I increase their site.  Because of the partitions, this cannot be done in Windows Disk Manager.   The server has the Intel IHC8R/ICH9R controller and is using the Intel Matrix Storage Console v7.8.  See attached screen  shot.

I would appreciate some help.

Windows 10 14.x RST - HDD not spinning down

$

Hi!

I have a pretty silent PC, so the only noise when it's idling or browsing the web is my storage HDD spin, so I use the Windows power options to spin it down and stop the noise after 1 minute.

This is not working in Windows 10 however. It works as it should with RST uninstalled. I've haven't tried previous RST drivers (13.x, 12.x), since I suppose they weren't built for Windows 10.

Am I missing some option, or is this some kind of bug? Everything is properly configured in the BIOS and, as I said, the HDD will spin down if RST is uninstalled.

Motherboard is Maximus VI Gene (z87).

Intel ICH10R Raid Option Rom shows 3tb drive as 746.5 on during POST (boot)

Folks, I have an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 MB using (all SATA drives) 2 - 2TB drives as RAID 1 boot drive, running Windows 7 64 bit. I also have my 2nd RAID2 (we will call it) as a data drive, 2 - 2TB drives as well, no issues at all... I've been running this configuration for some time. Last night, I swapped out the 2nd Raid (2-2tb data drives), and installed 2-3TB drives). Recap now I have my Boot Raid of 2 - 2tb drives, data Raid of 2 - 3TB drives.

When I boot up during POST, I see the Intel ICH10R Rom 8.0.0.1038 shows my boot Raid as the 2 - 2tb drives, HOWEVER the 3TB drives show as 746.5 GB, which one I don't recall. ** however when I boot into Windows 7, 64 bit, the Operating System sees my drives all fine, the correct data size, period, no issue. Even prior to upgrading Intel RST to version 11.7.0.1013, Intels software still shows the correct size. I only upgraded RST to a slightly newer version, thinking perhaps it may initiate a change to the Intel ROM version, which I figured it probably wouldn't and it didn't. I realize typically ROM or BIOS updates run via a utility, etc.. (I work in IT for over 20+ years, so I am familiar).

I looked at ASUS Bios updates and was already running the version of BIOS update that stated about showing the correct/updated hard drive size. I am at a loss here, as I would expect it to be a BIOS issue, I would think. However not sure if updating or if there is an update to the Raid Option Rom that would correct the issue or not? I found an article somewhere on Intels site, somewhere (sorry), that stated something similar to the Raid Option Rom does not need to be updated because.... Maybe someone has some insight? Perhaps the same issue and you can tell me what solved it? Thanks a ton!

(update: 6/7/15 - updated to the last BIOS version from 12/22/2010 on Asus website. Have to mention their tech support, though I did get an email response from them, about a 0+ out of 5)... updated to the 2010 BIOS didn't change anything. thank you

Initial Intel RST Application view, after simply installing the 3TB drives. Keeping in mind I will have 2 RAID sets, Boot Raid (2TB drives) , Data Raid (3TB drives)

intel RST.png

Update from shortly after posting: I decided to go into the Raid Configuration Utility during Boot up, since this is where you Configure the RAID sets so the OS (Windows 7-64 bit) can see them...  As you see from the screen shot the Config Utility during POST shows 746.5GB, so I figured I would select them and configure my 2nd RAID set, just to see what would happen.

Raid-Config.jpg

Here is after I selected the 3TB drives (ports 2 & 3) for my data RAID1 set. Again, you see 746.5GB, however each drive is 3TB.

Boot-up.jpg

Now here is what Windows 7 still sees nothing has changed. Since installing and prior to configuring the 3TB drives, Windows 7 and Intel RST Application has always seen the 3TB drives, as 3TB drives, period.. Now after configuring this 2nd RAID called 3TB, Windows still sees the drives individually and doesn't even recognize the 3TB RAID set..

INTEL RST Application (which I can NOT configure the RAID set inside this application for whatever reason, even if I run it as Admin), which I am the Admin anyhow.

Intel USB 3.0 xHCI (Re-)Boot hangs if HID ACKs IN Endpoints

$

Hi,

I've seen this issue with brand name PC's containing the Intel USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller (Dell, Lenovo, etc) and generally running Win7 Pro. Essentially if an HID device (does not have to be a keyboard or mouse and typically is not) ACKs the Host IN data requests on Interrupt IN Endpoints then the host hangs on reboot somewhere before the OS takes over. It "seems" the BIOS is waiting for the HID device to NAK on the IN Endpoint before it will release "something" and allow the OS to boot. The hang is indefinite. Only unplugging the device will allow the boot to proceed.

I believe the device is operating within the broad spec that HID paints. The device has data that it wishes to pass on to the host on each and every IN transaction that the host doles out to it. It does not matter if the device Stalls the HID Set Idle command or not.  The PC still hangs.

I can provide a device for testing and I have seen a smattering of similar complaints online, usually gamer HID devices but not exclusively.  I have run this issue by a few people I consider to be USB experts and they agree the host is creating the issue.

To reproduce, the Full Speed HID device should have at least one Interrupt IN Endpoint and the faster the bInterval value the worse the problem is, so set it to 2ms for testing.  When the host issues an IN transaction on the Interrupt Endpoint in question, have the HID device always ACK that request by returning a data packet that matches the report for the device. If you want to use a keyboard then a standard keyboard report like 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 will suffice. The situation where the PC reboots is the worst case.

Since this is such a nasty failure mode I think Intel should look at this issue. There may be other scenarios that create a similar failure but I have not tested them yet. I did test a CDC (Virtual COM) device that has an Interrupt IN Endpoint at 2ms ACKing alll the time and it does NOT exhibit the same failure. So it seems the host is penalizing only HID in this manner.

Thanks,

GB

Intel RSTe drivers power down hard disks after a reboot

$
0
0

hi,

in my workstation (Fujitsu M720, board D3128-A) with a chipset Intel C600/X79 (Intel Xeon E5-1620), the newer RSTe Intel device drivers for Intel AHCI/SATA and SAS controller shut down the hard disks when the operating system reboots (and after it, they are powered on). It doesn't matter if Windows 7 / Windows 8.1 / Windows 10 is used (or a x86 or X64 Windows operating system).

I tried the following Intel RSTe device drivers:

- 3.2.0.1135 no power off for hard disks, but this driver works only with Windows 7

- 3.5.0.1101 This is the only device driver which works with Windows 7 AND Windows 8 (Windows 10) and does NOT power off hard disks when rebooting the operating system

All other newer Intel RSTe device drivers work with Windows 8 / Windows 10, but they power off all hard disks after a reboot, in fact the following releases:

- 3.5.1.1009

- 3.6.0.1093

- 3.7.0.1093

- 3.8.0.1111

- 4.1.0.0147

- 4.3.0.1219 (this driver from July 2015 is not avaible at Intel's website, but available at Fujitsu's support website)

As the workstation contains three hard disks (and a SSD), a "click" can be heard after a reboot when the hard disks are forced to power off (and then, after a few seconds, they are again started-up, so a reboot delays for about 5 to 10 seconds).

Of course this "click" by the forced power off is barely audible with newer hard disks (all by Seagate) like the ST1000 or ST4000, but can clearly be heard with older hard disks like Seagate's ST31000 (as ST31000528AS).

There is a dual boot installed in my system, so reboots will occur more often than in other PC's. As a permanent shut down of a hard disk after a reboot is not very useful (and could prevent a long life), I still use Intel's RSTe device driver 3.5.0.1101 (from 2012), because this is the only RSTe driver which works with Windows 8.1 (and Windows 10) and does not power down the hard disks after a reboot.

The SAS device driver (which appears in the Windows device manager als "Intel(R) C600 Series Chipset SAS RAID (SATA mode)") is absolutely necessary to access to drives at the SAS controller. Intel's AHCI device driver is not necessary, because the access to the hard disks is already possible with the device driver supported by Windows (but when a newer Intel AHCI device driver is installed for testing, it will also cause a power off of hard disks after a reboot).

A few months ago, the German Fujitsu support said, they had no influence to change this "power off feature" of hard disks by Intel's device driver.

ciao

Can't install Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller drivers

$

Hi! I have an issue where I have a device that does not work as it should. And before I can say with hard evidence that the device is faulty I need to update my USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller drivers. Atm the drivers installed are the one that Microsoft provides(version 10.0.10240.16384). And I want to install the Intel ones just to see if that does any difference since it's Intel technology I think it might. (It says "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)" atm and with the Intel drivers installed I think it just says "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller" right? Might be wrong on this)

So I went to the drivers section and there was many things to choose from. My main thing here seemed to be that I needed to figure out what kind of chipset family my computer belonged to. And after some investigation is looks like it's the 9 series. In my device manager above the USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller it even says "Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller" over the "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller" and my motherboard for anyone who wants to know is a GA-Z97X-Gaming 7 and my processor is a i7 4790K if that helps.

So I downloaded the fitting drivers for the 8/9 family series chipset called "Intel(R)_USB_3.0_eXtensible_Host_Controller_Driver_3.0.5.69.zip". The problem is then I've extracted the zip files it says that my computer does not fit the minimum requirements to install this driver. I tried changing the admin rights for it and it's compatibility settings but I just got that message all the time. So I tried to install every other USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver I could find and it says the same thing. So I then had to do something else and tried to install the "Intel® Chipset Identification Utility" to really find out what chipset I have BUT when I try to install that it says I need to be on a admin account and give the installation admin rights. I AM on the only admin account on my computer AND I have given the installation file admin rights through properties as well. So no luck there either.

And now I'm stuck. I've searched for almost 2 days in the Intel forums and across the web without becoming any smarter. Any drivers on the Gigabyte website for my motherboard does not seem to do any difference about this. I might also add that I'm on windows 10 x64.

If anyone can point me towards the drivers I actually need to install for my Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller that'd be great!

I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit running on a Samsung 830 Series 256GB SSD, I also have two more HDDs, one Seagate 3TB and one Toshiba 160GB... No issues with these drives.

On my previous setup I was using these HDDs on a X58 chipset Sata 2 ports, also in RAID-0 mode, Intel RST 11 and got no issues.

I think the drives are going idle too fast, because when I need to open or seek for something on the drive, the click starts.

I don't know if this is a BIOS problem or a Intel RST problem, I don't know for sure, but when the computer starts, during post I can hear the click (only once, if I go to UEFI there is no click there and the drive is detected by BIOS).

I tried some troubleshoots, configured (advanced power management, automatic acoustic management, sata aggressive link power management, windows power management) but nothing worked : (

I'm kinda desperate because I have one "click" each 10 seconds (approximately), it means 3600 load-unload cycles in 10 hours!

For now I made the disks off-line through Windows disk management, until I figure out some solution/workaround.

I appreciate any help you can give!

UPDATE!

The problem was solved by installing Intel RST 12 series drivers, power off, disconnect the PSU cable, connect the affected hard drives on another Z97 Sata port and power on the computer.

If I install Intel RST 13 series driver the issue will return, is this a bug with RST 13 series? I don't think my HDD spending one load/unload cycle each 10 seconds is normal.

What driver to use for an old P45 chipset MB with RAID 1 and Windows 10

Hi! I ahve an old but still well working computer with an ASUS MB (P5Q PRO) with a P45 / ICH10R chipset. After upgrading to windows 10, I cant start the Intel Matrix Storage Console anymore. Due to severe drive issues before, I have had to stick with the 8.9 to be able to use the RAID.

Now that GUI won't start and I don't actually know if the RAID is working or not.

Before when I had drive issues (testing versions over 8.9) my system just ignored RAID and started as a regular IDE drive, hence i don't know if the RAID is alive or not. In BIOS, all looks fine and also in the POST RAID utility.

RST service not running on Windows10

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Windows10 Pro 64bit and I noticed that the RST service is not running (icon has a yellow "!" mark) and my computer was slightly slower than before. I'm not very good in these stuff but I feel something's wrong when a driver is not working. I tried restarting the service manually, ran it in compatibility mode, and it all failed. I tried the Intel Update Utility but it did not detect any new drivers. I also tried to install the latest 14.5.0.1081 driver (SetupRST.exe) manually from Intel's download site but it showed a failure message and says "This platform is not supported"

I really need help with this, thanks!
