Does the new (15.2.0.1020) Rapid Storage Technology driver address issues in Windows 10 where HDDs couldn't be defragmented while using iRST?

$
0
0

I consulted these forums in the past about this issue, but the individual providing support didn't seem to think Intel had been able to replicate these issues and thus couldn't address them.  Could anyone provide any information on this topic now that there's a new driver?  I believe this has been an issue for a lot of folks using Dell XPS 15 9550's whether or not they realize it.  Costumers routinely complain about BSODs for this laptop and I too experienced them on a regular basis (even needed to send my PC back for repairs, twice) until I reformatted and did not reinstall iRST.  Since then, my computer has been completely stable (this was months ago).  Before my computer ultimately began to fail, the first sign of a problem would be that I could no longer defragment my 1TB HDD.  Windows would see it as a SSD, which was obviously an error.

Thanks for any help.

Intel RST BitLocker eDrive Win10 conflicts

$

Hi,

I'm trying to use BitLocker eDrive hardware encryption, but Intel RST 14.5.0.1081 is confilicting. I know this because when I uninstall RST, it works, but when it's installed it uses software encryption (BitLocker asks if I want to encrypt whole drive or only used portion)

This problem existed with an older version of RST on Windows 8.1 too and was fixed in version 13.2 (not entirely sure of exact version) but seems to be back.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology RAID says drive failed but the drive seems good

$

I have a Dell XPS 8100 that I purchased about 8 years ago. I ordered it with RAID 1 (mirroring) and a 1.5TB system disk. The system (OS) drive is the RAID drive. About a year ago drives started to fail, which I expected. I would replace the failed drive (port 0 or 1) and log on as an administrator and run the GUI for IRST. It would say there is a blank disk and offer to rebuild the array. I would say yes and over the next 24 hours or so it would rebuild the array. Fine. But a about a year ago drives started failing pretty frequently. In the last few months they have been failing at a rate of about one a month. I was talking to my supervisor at work about this (we are IT guys) and he suggested maybe the drives are not really failing but the IRST controller is having a problem and is giving me false information. He suggested bringing one of the "failed" drives to work and testing it. Today I brought the most recently failed disk to work and plugged it into my Startech USB drive dock. I am able to access it with no problem. Since it is mirrored it behaves just as if it were the only drive, with the same structure as a single drive in a Windows 7 system. I can open and access my user folder and can open files.

I noticed that there is a driver update for the IRST on my system. I was reluctant to install this before as I was afraid if something went wrong I would lose the whole array but if I can access the drive I brought to work I suppose I have a backup of everything.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on this?

Thanks,

Don

Building RAID config post SBS 2011 installation on Intel 5000X mainboard

I have an HP XW6400 Workstation loaded with SBS 2011 on a single 1TB drive. I'm interested in adding a second drive and building a RAID 1 config from within the MSM utility if possible.

I can't get the RAID drivers or MSM to install. The error is "The computer does not meet the minimum requirements..." or "Operating System not supported..."

I've tried all the available driver versions I can find both here:

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3234681&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=2103

and here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Server 2008 is clearly a supported OS and I would think this board with the 5000X chipset would be a supported board?

Thanks for any insight.

Intel RST, RAID 10 array offline, clear metadata ?

$

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a problem with my RAID 10 array and need some advice.

My computer is based on an ASUS P8Z77 WS motherboard with an Intel controller managing the following ports :

2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s)

4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s)

My OS is Windows 7.

I have a RAID 0 array of two SSDs for the system on the two SATA 6Gb/s ports and a RAID 10 array of four HDDs for data on the four SATA 3Gb/s ports.

Both arrays are managed through Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 12.9.0.1001.

Yesterday I tried to clone a friend's HDD with Clonezilla, using an extra SATA port managed by a Marvell PCIe 9128 controller.

During the process of trying to save an image of the HDD on my computer, I couldn't see my RAID 10 array as a target to save the image and aborted the process.

After a reboot, one of the physical HDD of my RAID 10 array was indicated as degraded, so I allowed the IRST software to rebuild the data under Windows overnight.

Everything went fine and my RAID 10 array was working this morning.

Tonight I started my computer and realized my RAID 10 array was not accessible. All of the four drives are marked as offline in the IRST's POST slash screen and in the IRST software under Windows.

I'm pretty sure the HDDs are working and the data on the disks should be OK, but I'm not sure how to try to get it online again.

In the IRST software, I have the option to "Clear metadata" for each one of the four physical HDDs of my RAID 10 array.

So my questions are :

1. Should I click "Clear metadata" in order to let the RAID 10 array "rebuild" itself ?

1B. Which one should I click then ?

2. Would it be possible to try to rebuild the data from the RAID 10 array HDDs and save it to another HDD before trying anything with the IRST ?

2B. Which software would allow me to do that ?

3. Should I cry ?

Thanks in advance if you have any insight in this kind of problem and any advice...

Intel AMT 5.0 + TLS

$

Hello!

I trying to configure Intel AMT-ME 5.0-5.2 motherboard based on Q45 to use SSL/TLS-HTTPS connection.

Intel AMT versions - Wikipedia - tells that AMT 5.0 have TLS.

I make all needed settings at BIOS and ME-BIOS and successfully access to AMT PC via Web-GUI at 16992 port. But I want SSL/TLS connection encryption.

First I try to use AcuWizard, but it tells that AMT5.0 does not support host-configuration (only AMT7.0 or later), but USB-key configuration does not have certificates and SSL/TLS options.

Second I try MeshCommander (latest v0.3.8) - but all the way it shows only Error:400.

Third I use "ToolMesh - Manageability Director/Commander" - it works more stable, so I create and import to AMT module 2 security certificates (root and user) - certificates was added successfully. Also I add those certificates to local Windows certification storage (at PC from where I trying to connect to AMT PC). And also I delete some suspicious 3rd party application from AMT named as "venCA (Unicenter)". But when I trying at "Manageability Director" setup SecurityProfile to AMT-PC with "intel AMT Security" option set to any of 4 types with TLS - error appears: "SetTLSKeyAndCertificate() returned FAILED_WEB_CALL". Also at AMT PC tab "Security" option TLS shows as "Unsupported" and drop-down menu is absent.

I try Intel SCS console configuration to make "Delta configuration USB key" but it needs some "CA RCS server reach Microsoft CA" (something like this) and can not just use certificates stored at the near folder at the same PC... OMG! Also IntelSCS tells something about alternative "CA local plugin" but google tells me that this plugin does not exist yet.

Making AMT<7.0 works through TLS is some kind of maltreatment!!!

Can anyone help with SSL/TLS-HTTPS connection enabling at AMT5.0???

Does Intel G45 have AMT? Which intel chipsets have AMT with preboot text console via KVM-VNC?

Hello!

1. Does those Intel chipsets have AMT? Does they support KVM-VNC?

a) Intel G45 (Intel P45/P43 rev. A3 + Intel 82801JR (ICH10R) rev. 00)

b) Intel Z68 (Intel Sandy Bridge rev. 09 + Intel Z68 rev. B3)

c) Intel H170 (Intel Skylake rev. 07 + Intel Skylake PCH rev. 31)

2. Does Intel have list of all chipsets that provides preboot text console via KVM-VNC?

Autoreboot with whole drive encrypting (servers like)

$

0

Hello!

It seems that Intel have some mans with brains so I hope you can help me a little...

I need to make one small server (based on standard but robust PC components Intel G45 + Q9550S) whole encrypted and with auto-reboot possibility without admin present each time. The purpose for encryption is to secure server data from direct access by unscrupulous datacenter stuff: by copying whole HDD, or just stealing 1 of 2 HDD from RAID, etc. And don't tell me about "case access alert" etc - this information will not help to protect stolen data.

What possibilities I already examine:

A) HDD password does not encrypt data at HDD, so if someone stole HDD its possible to open data by: removing password protection, change HDD controller to similar, etc.

B) Windows BitLocker with default settings have 2 huge security problems: a) all system is encrypts with keys that stored at unsecure area of the same HDD (yes, BL have many levels etc, but nevertheless its unsecure); b) data stored at user private area encrypts better and keys are hidden, but its impossible to access encrypted users data (like database or web server) without entering a password manually, so auto-reboot will not work. So at default settings BitLocker is useless.

C) TC/DC/BC/PGP/etc whole disk encryption have no security issue but they required a manually entered password at boot time - so admin must be there and enter password via keyboard.

D) PXE boot with DC have problem because DC loader with keys transfers via internet without encryption - it is a total security hole.

E) iPXE boot with DC already have TLS/HTTPS connection, but still require not encrypted boot image with DC keys that must always lie opened via internet and awaiting for server reboots - that is too a huge security problem because that host with boot-image can be broken by some hackers methods via internet.

F) iLO/RILOE/IP-KVM is a standalone old hardware versions of new Intel AMT-KVM technology and cost too high money for they primitive possibilities, also no one knows does they secure or not?!

G) Intel AMT with KVM-VNC gives possibility to enter password at boot time for whole disk encryption made by TC/DC/BC/PGP/etc via secure TLS/HTTPS protocol, but it still needs admin for password entering, so auto-reboot does not work.

H) So it seems that only automated and secure method is to use TPM soldered on MB (TPM added via TPM-connector also can be stolen or fastly copied). TPM can be used with BitLocker so encryption keys will lie inside soldered on motherboard TPM - that is secure enough (not many can crack TPM and extract keys from it).

So here is my questions:

1. Does anyone can add something to my list? Another methods? Problems resolves?

2. What method of server encryption do you use and recommend?

3. What method you can suggest to owners of motherboards without soldered TPM, without TPM-connectors, without Intel AMT-KVM? (as I have)

HDD click (excessive load-unload cycles)

Two of my HDDs are clicking and have an excessive load-unload cycles.

I'm running 2x Samsung F3 1TB (HD103SJ) in RAID-0 using Z97 chipset Sata 3 ports.

My MB is a ASRock Z97 Extreme6, HDDs firmware is 1AJ10001. MB Bios is P1.33.

I had 13.1.0.1058 RST driver and installed 12.9.2.1000 but the issue persisted.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit running on a Samsung 830 Series 256GB SSD, I also have two more HDDs, one Seagate 3TB and one Toshiba 160GB... No issues with these drives.

On my previous setup I was using these HDDs on a X58 chipset Sata 2 ports, also in RAID-0 mode, Intel RST 11 and got no issues.

I think the drives are going idle too fast, because when I need to open or seek for something on the drive, the click starts.

I don't know if this is a BIOS problem or a Intel RST problem, I don't know for sure, but when the computer starts, during post I can hear the click (only once, if I go to UEFI there is no click there and the drive is detected by BIOS).

I tried some troubleshoots, configured (advanced power management, automatic acoustic management, sata aggressive link power management, windows power management) but nothing worked : (

I'm kinda desperate because I have one "click" each 10 seconds (approximately), it means 3600 load-unload cycles in 10 hours!

For now I made the disks off-line through Windows disk management, until I figure out some solution/workaround.

I appreciate any help you can give!

UPDATE!

The problem was solved by installing Intel RST 12 series drivers, power off, disconnect the PSU cable, connect the affected hard drives on another Z97 Sata port and power on the computer.

If I install Intel RST 13 series driver the issue will return, is this a bug with RST 13 series? I don't think my HDD spending one load/unload cycle each 10 seconds is normal.
